- About Us -

The Alkek Velodrome is a hub of cycling excellence. Housed on the grounds of Cullen Park in West Houston, is the Alkek Velodrome, a 333 meter, concrete cycling track. The Alkek Velodrome’s banking ranges from 33 degrees in the turns to 9 degrees in the straights. It was built in 1986 and has held everything from Local and Regional Racing, Nationals Championships, Olympic Qualifiers and Cyclocross Racing.

For the past 30 years, the Alkek Velodrome has been owned and operated by the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department. In 2007 the city transferred the management and operations of the Velodrome, leasing it to The Greater Houston Cycling Foundation or GHCF.

The GHCF is a Texas non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting and providing access to the sport of cycling in the greater Houston area.  The foundation is an entirely volunteer organization and oversees all of the programs, including the Youth Cycling League, Adult Cycling League, weekly and event racing, coaching of junior and senior racers, as well as other charitable activities in service of building a safe and fun environment for Houstonians of all ages to enjoy cycling.

The current members of the GHCF board of directors are:

Ethan Bing

Doug Evans

Carl Jones

Jane Stricker

Lisa Gibson

Tom Craddock

Our current program director is:

Stuart Gardner

The success of the GHCF and the ongoing availability of the Alkek Velodrome depends entirely on our ability to recruit and leverage volunteers to keep the gates open and the races running.  If you have an interest in volunteering at the track, we are always seeking enthusiastic members of the Houston community.  We need volunteers for the following activities:

  • Managing open sessions:  Open/close track, enforce track rules, collect fees, assist riders with access to rental bikes.  Days/times needed:  Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm – 8:30pm, Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8am – 10:30am

  • Race Director:  Run a racing event, manage rider registration, collect fees, manage race schedule, work with officials, scoring and results.  Days/times needed:  Friday night races, Wednesday night crits, weekend race events, based on schedule posted.

  • Race Night Support:  assist race director in running the race event, manage lap cards and bells for races, assist with registration, scoring and results, and payouts.  Same schedule as race director.

  • Event Support: for bigger events, volunteers to support racing activity throughout event – holders, lap cards and bells, etc.  Days/times needed:  varies based on racing schedule

  • New Rider Class Support:  assisting coaches with bike setup, instructions and mock races for new rider classes.

If you have an interest, or know someone with an interest, in volunteering at the track, please contact Stuart Gardner at info@alkekvelodrome.com
